An important Incunable Bible, Liber Vitae , Biblia cum glosis ordinarijs et interlinearibus excerptis ex omnibus ferme Ecclesie sancte doctoribus, printed in Venice in 1495 by Paganino Paganini.

Rare edition of the commentary to the Bible by the French Franciscan, Niccolò di Lira (Niccolo de Lyra).  The first edition was published by Gutenbergs’s between from 1471 and 1472.  This edition was edited by Bernardino Gadolo , whose name appears on the colophon of the last volume.

The « glossa ordinaria » is by Walafridus Strabo, the interlinear gloss by Anselmus Laudunensis .

Double columns of text with interlinear gloss, surrounded by commentary. 83 lines of commentary to a column.

This volume contains the New Testament with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, the Epistles of Paul to the Romans and Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians,  Thessalonians, Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, Acts of the Apostles, James, Peter John, Jude, the Apocalypse. 

Small pinhole wormhole in the last 50 leaves with small loss to at most one letter (impossible to see in the photos).  One leaf with a defect to the paper that causes a very small hole. Some other minor defects, but an incredible amazing fresh and clean Bible printed on crisp and heavy paper.

Attractive full vellum binding. Speckled fore edge.

This volume contains from leaf 1013 to leaf 1398. Complete in itself.  This is the last volume with the colophon (see the last photo).

Set composito composto da 3 volumi (di 4, manca l’ultimo volume contenente l’Apocalisse) dell’edizione della Bibbia con le postille di Nicolaus de Lyra stampata da Boneto Locatello nel 1489 e dai due volumi di cui si compone l’edizione delle postille del De Lyra data alle stampe da Paganino Paganini nel 1495. Nel I e III volume numerose belle figure in xilografia, che hanno l’importante primato di essere le prime illustrazioni ad una Bibbia stampate in Italia. Tra queste sono due splendide immagini che rappresentano la costruzione dell’arca di Noè. La prima pagina dei 5 tomi ha una splendida inizale xilografica che ritrae un monaco seduto davanti un leggio. Magnifica edizione, la prima della Bibbia in cui vengono stampate insieme la glossa ordinaria e interlineare e le Postilla perpetuae in universa Biblia di Nicolò de Lira, ampio ed esaustivo commento all’intero testo biblico che fu più volte ristampato nel corso del Quattro e Cinquecento. Nelle prime cinquanta postille Niccolò de Lira tratta il senso perpetuo o letterale delle Sacre Scritture, nelle successive trentacinque il senso mistico o morale. Half vellum and uniform bindings from mid twentieth century, marbled pasteboards. (5) Composite set consisting in three volumes (of 4, wanting the last volume containing the Apocalisse) edition of the Bible with notations by Nicolaus de Lyra printed by Boneto Locatello in 1489 and of the two volumes that make up the edition of annotations of De Lyra date to be Paganino Paganini prints in 1495. In Volume I and III several beautiful woodcuts, which have the important distinction of being the first illustrations of a Bible printed in Italy. Among these, there are two beautiful images that represent the construction of Noah’s Ark. The first page of each volume has a wonderful woodcut initial depicting a seated monk in front of a bookstand. Magnificent edition, the first Bible in which the ordinary and the interlinear gloss is printed along with the Postilla perpetuae in universa Biblia of Nicholas de Lira, extensive and exhaustive comments to the entire biblical text that was reprinted several times in the course of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In the first fifty footnotes Nicholas de Lira talks about the perpetual or literal sense of Sacred Scripture, while in the remaining thirty talks about mystical sense or morality.
